As covered elsewhere in the mainstream media, on Thursday 3rd September 2020 at 1646, Waverley’s bow made heavy contact with Brodick Pier whilst berthing.

A cross-agency major incident was declared with 17 of the 213 passengers on board reported injuries, with a number of those taken to hospital.

First thoughts are naturally for those who were injured at the end of what should have been an enjoyable cruise. Thoughts are also with those who have worked tirelessly over the past two years to return Waverley to service.

After caring for the injured the ship’s crew ensured that passengers were plied with snacks, drinks and information. An emergency sailing by CalMac’s Caledonian Isles returned the remaining passengers to Ardrossan with buses taking them back to their point of embarkation for around 0100.

The response and professionalism of many the parties involved in responding to the incident was exceptional and deserves widespread praise.

Understandably, given the damage to the ship, the remainder of Waverley’s 2020 sailing season has been cancelled.
