Waverley for Tarbert
Sunday 16th August saw Waverley attract the crowds as the weather finally encouraged many to go aboard for the unique sailing from Glasgow to Tarbert with an afternoon cruise on Loch Fyne. After leaving Glasgow those on board Waverley were offered a good view of the massive 11,200-tonne section of the aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, built on the Clyde as it started its journey around the coast of Scotland to Rosyth for final assembly. The section, called Lower Block 04, is the largest part of HMS Prince of Wales at 20 metres high, 80 metres long and comprises a fifth of the overall vessel. It will take about five days to reach Rosyth in Fife, travelling around the north of Scotland. Interestingly though one of the tugs involved in moving the section of carrier was skippered by former Waverley catering crew member David Allan. David started as galley steward on Waverley in 1997 before becoming a member of the deck crew.
After a good run down river Waverley approached Largs to find a good crowd assembled on the pier awaiting her arrival.

On departure from Largs the steamer made her way to Rothesay before heading for the Kyles and Tighnabruaich – the journey through the narrows all the better given the weather and conditions on deck. As Waverley made her approach to Tarbert a good crowd gathered on deck ready for the walk to the village while others boarded for the short afternoon cruise on Loch Fyne.

The return sailing was equally as enjoyable as the outward but with the added attraction of two ships departing Rothesay at the same time thanks to the Pier Master who cast off Waverley’s lines even though he was not officially on duty.
