Myra Allen 1958-2022

Myra was a completely dedicated paddle steamer enthusiast who enjoyed sailing on our steamers as well as travelling the world with her husband John, our current Chairman, to seek out obscure and remote examples.
A few days before her death, she carried out her final duty as Editor of our journal, Paddle Wheels, by signing off the proofs of the edition due to be posted on 8 December. She had held this appointment since 1992, making her the longest serving Editor by a large margin.
Myra also had the honour of serving as our Chairman and as a Director of both Waverley companies between 2004 and 2013. She was also a long-serving member of the London & Home Counties Branch Committee. Previously she had been a “Medway Queen Muddie,” working on the paddler at her mud berth on Damhead Creek.
PSPS President Douglas McGowan MBE commented “Myra faced her debilitating illness with enormous courage right up until the end. She served our Society and the Waverley over a very long period with absolute loyalty and dedication and we owe her a huge debt of gratitude. Our thoughts are very much with her husband John at this very sad time”.
