“Paddle Wheels” Issue 215 – Out Now!

The Spring 2014 issue of “Paddle Wheels” has been posted to PSPS members.

Features

Waverley’s Timetable 2014

Running Waverley is an expensive business. Fuel now costs an average of £450 per hour and crew almost £3,000 per day. Pilotage, where needed, can cost up to £2,800 per port. Calling at some of the piers, even on the Clyde, can cost almost £600 per visit. Putting a timetable together therefore always involves compromises. Kathleen O’Neill, Chief Executive of Waverley Excursions Ltd. responds to some members questions.

100 Years in Steam

2014 marks the centenary of three of the wonderful paddle steamers in Switzerland; SS Savoie, DS Stadt Rapperswil and DS Lötschberg. Danniel Eichenberger summarises their history and technical details.

Welcome Back Vevey!

The Lake Geneva diesel-electric paddle steamer Vevey returned to service in late 2013 after an extensive rebuild and new engines. Photo feature by Myra Allen.

Paddle Steamer Ryde

Roger Dunkinson pays a visit to PS Ryde forty four years after her withdrawal from service by British Rail and over twenty years since her then owners abruptly withdrew from negotiations with PSPS, which could have resulted in her restoration and possible return to service.

G. Zanardelli

Graham R. Hand pays a visit to paddle steamer G. Zanardelli, named after a former Italian Prime Minister, built by Escher-Wyss of Zurich in 1903 and now in its 111th year on Lake Garda.

Distant Paddle Wheels

A run down by John Allen of scheduled 2014 paddle steamer operations in Austria, Czech Republic, Italy and Switzerland.
