Profile

John’s father joined PSPS in September 1960 and John joined in his own right in 1962, aged eleven. He returned Kingswear Castle to full passenger service in 1985 and ran the business on the Medway and Thames, as well as sailing as the ship’s principal captain, until 2012.

He is currently chairman of the Paddle Steamer Kingswear Castle (PSKC) Trust and liaises with her operator on the River Dart providing backup and support where required as well as occasionally sailing as her relief captain. He has also handled Waverley which was on his Medway, Thames and Portsmouth pilotage certificates for many years.
He acquired PS Compton Castle’s engine for PSKC Trust 2016.

John Megoran has written five books including three on paddle steamers.
