Wessex & Dart Branch Branch Nominee.
Profile
Andrew joined PSPS as a sixth-former in 1968, having fallen in love at a very early age with paddle steamers operating out of Portsmouth (where he lived) to Ryde, Isle of Wight (where he as lived all his working life).
He is now on his third stint on the Wessex (& Dart) Committee and was their secretary for ten years.
Andrew retired after 43 years teaching English and Latin in two very different schools which were only five minutes’ walk apart – a state comprehensive and an independent. He proudly boasts that a picture of PS Waverley was always to be seen hanging in his classroom; trouble there was for any pupil not acknowledging the paddler’s existence!
He has written articles for shipping journals and has contributed to a book about the Solent. He is now engaged (when time permits) on research into the small steam ferries that operated between Portsmouth and Gosport with a view to joint authorship of a book.
